While traveling about Washington State on my annual haunt tour, I came across an excellent haunt in the town of Buckley, Washington. The Fright Factory presents a trifecta of chills and thrills which includes: a house with 8 rooms, an outside orchard with several sets and a 3rd house with 7 sets. They use a minimum of 28 actors but can accommodate 40 – 50 actors to scare the living crap out of up to a 1000 people nightly! Some of their sets really startled us (the infamous Clown Room and the Gallery of Serial Killers forced my friend to change his pants) and they change their themes every season. The Fright Factoryhas been in operation for 16 years in various locations but has been based at its current location in Buckley for the pat 9 years. Open every weekend in October and every week night before Halloween. Admission is $10 (but there’s a $1 off with a donation of a can of food to the local food bank). Well worth the price! Highly recommended to all Deadites. A special thanks to Dennis Wink for his fine hospitality and for producing a truly terrifying experience.

Seasonal Films – “The Unholy Three” – 1930 (100 years of Horror)

To kick off the 30s, I present “The Unholy Three” directed by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney, Sr. (in his last film), Mae Busch and Matt Moore. This 1930 “talkie” remaking of the 1925 silent film tells the story of murder and intrigue at a circus sideshow as several performers go on a crime spree.  Hard to find on Netflix but is available complete on You Tube. Drink a toast to Lon Chaney’s swan song.

Happy “Autumnal Equinox”! To commemorate this holiday I present a strange piece that was an NBC miniseries in 1978. Based on Tom Tryon’s 1973 novel, “The Dark Secret of Harvest Home”, directed by Leo Penn and starring Bette Davis, David Ackroyd, Rosanna Arquette and Rene Auberjonoiis, tells the story of a young couple moving to a small New England town that practices that “old time” religion.  Although the book was vastly superior to this miniseries, it is still worth a look. Hopefully it will give you some ideas at “planting time”.

Morey’s FEARS: Terror on the Boardwalk is Coming

Imagine strolling through Morey’s Mariners Landing Pier at night without the welcoming light show of the Ferris wheel. Rides lie dark and dismantled. Somewhere in the distance there’s laughter, but it’s not the happy, carefree variety that comes with spinning the teacups too fast.

“Morey’s FEARS is designed to be one of the most intense Halloween attractions out there,” said Dino Fazio, Director of Pier Operations. “We’re putting our own twist on ten years of haunt research to make this event unforgettable.”

The Ghost Ship, having undergone numerous changes before the start of the 2011 season to make the experience more intense and immersive, will serve as a centerpiece for Morey’s FEARS.

“We’re significantly increasing the number of actors in the Ghost Ship,” said Terry O’Brien, Ghost Ship Manager. “It’s going to be a non-stop nightmare.”

Morey’s FEARS will feature a supercharged Ghost Ship experience, themed food and drink, dark versions of the Sea Serpent, Super Scooters, Teacups, Pirates of the Wildwoods, Rollie’s Coaster, Moby Dick and the Musik Express as well as a couple of all-new Morey’s FEARS only attractions, among other shocking surprises.

“Two new mazes have been designed in house by the talented team responsible for the hugely successful and ever-changing Ghost Ship,” said Jack Morey, Vice President of Morey’s Piers.

FEARS is Ready for YOU!

Walk through looming corn stalks in Cornstalkers – a horrifying corn maze situated on the beach near Mariner’s Landing featuring a custom soundtrack designed to disorient and terrify guests. In addition, clowns that no circus wanted run rampant in CarnEvil – a truly twisted carnival maze sprawling over one quarter of the pier. There will be plenty of other scream-inducing surprises packed into the pier as well.

A team of 16 makeup artists is preparing to mutate more than 50 actors into creepy clowns, living scarecrows and denizens of the undead with unique makeup looks.

“We’re working on hundreds of costumes for various characters,” said O’Brien. “Our actors will be clad in a variety of shop made and hand crafted costumes, all designed to instill fear and unease in any guest unfortunate enough to encounter them.”

Morey’s FEARS – Terror on the Boardwalk will take place on Fri. and Sat. nights, Oct. 14 through 29 from 6:30-11 p.m. This is a gated event and admission will be required. Tickets are $25 and include unlimited access to all available rides and attractions for the night.

Be warned: Morey’s FEARS is NOT for the faint of heart (or children under 8). Guests are not permitted to wear masks, costumes and/or makeup to the event.

100 fans will be selected to mix and mingle with Kane Hodder. The media will be there and you may even get a chance to be on a reality TV show.

The Fear Overload Haunted House Ready to Terrorize the Bay California Area

Fear Overload Premier Haunted House cracks open its doors this September 30th 2011 for another horrifying season. Fear Overload is one of the Bay Area’s most popular Haunted Houses and is rated the scariest haunted house in California by HauntWorld.com. Nathan and David Polanco, the masterminds behind Fear Overload, have been in the haunting business for over ten years and this year, they have developed two haunted houses: The Uprising and 3D Mayhem. “These are high shock haunted houses with horrifying scenes; they are not meant for children under 14,” Polanco warns. “Our haunts are specifically designed to implant fear and exploit all of the senses. The Baysox Introduce Psycho Safari Haunted House at Prince George’s Stadium

The Bowie Baysox and Tulip Gulch Productions announced that a terrifying new adventure at Prince George’s Stadium in MD is coming this Haunt Season. The Psycho Safari is a haunted attraction open to thrill-seekers starting Friday, Sept. 30, and continuing every Friday and Saturday in October, as well as Sunday, Oct. 30, and Halloween Monday, Oct. 31. Tulip Gulch Productions produces the longest-running haunted attraction the region, now in its 10th year at Prince George’s Stadium and 25th year in Bowie.

The Psycho Safari is rated PG-13 and parental discretion is highly advised. The show features more than 30 live actors along with props and special effects, and takes approximately 20 minutes to walk through. Tickets for the haunted house are $17, and special rates are available for groups of 10 or more that order tickets in advance. Tickets can be purchased online at www.baysox.com or by calling the Baysox at (301) 805-6000.

Stadium gates open for the haunted house at 6:30 p.m. and tours run from dusk until 11 p.m. The entire show takes place indoors and all shows open rain or shine. The line for the haunted house forms on the concourse level of the stadium. While the concourse is covered and remains dry, fans are encouraged to dress for the weather.

Halloween Wars are Coming to the Food Network

Every Halloween Season, television heats up and many channels decide to get in the spirit and celebrate Halloween with all of us. And this season, from many stations like ABC Family with Pretty Little Liars to the Travel Channel it will also be coming to the Food Network.

This year the Food Network is going to have its viewers enjoying the season of pumpkins with HALLOWEEN WARS kicking the cover off the casket on October 2, 2011 at 8pm CST.

In this series, lasting four episodes, there will be teams of five consisting of the usual suspects on the Food Network with Candy Makers, Cake Decorators, Pumpkin Carvers, Bakers and more ready to work together to make small term masterpieces with a Grand Prize of $50,000 going to the team the Wins it all!

Halloween Wars Coming to The Food Network

Viewers who already enjoy Cupcake Wars will notice its host Justin Willman having some Halloween fun hosting Halloween Wars as well. The teams are going to have tasks to accomplish creating Horror-Pieces out of Cakes, Candy, Pumpkins and more.

The Judges Panel will vary from week to week based on the competition that week. Some of the Celebrity Judges will include Horror Metal Icon Rob Zombie, Sin City Actress Jaime King, Scout Taylor-Compton from Rob Zombie’s Halloween, and the Horror Children’s Author R.L. Stine.

According to the current Schedule the Four Episode Series will include:

“Witches and Scary Places” where the teams will have to create Halloween themed displays that tell the tale of a Haunted house and a Creepy Scary Witch.

Next up on October 9th is: “Scary Tales” where the remaining teams will have to get haunting with the challenge of a Twisted Fairy Tale.

On, Sunday, October 16, Halloween Wars will feature one of my favorite topics with “Zombies vs. Vampires”. In this challenge the teams will have tasks involving what else, Zombies and Vampires.

Bringing the last two remaining teams head to head will be “Underworld” hitting the small screen on October 23rd where the final team will WIN $50,000!
