Dan Krein: Creator of Souls Of The Forsaken

When I first saw Dan Krein’s video of Souls of the Forsaken I had to replay it several times just to catch all the detail he had put into his Home Haunt! His haunt ranked among the few who made it to the top of the Home Haunter’s Association for Top Home Haunts of 2010. You can feel his passion for Halloween just by reading this interview. And passion is what really keep us going into the next year anyway, right? I know that is what keeps me typing, podcasting, blogging, and haunting. Passion is contagious and I’m starting to feel a bit like attending a trade show or something. I can relate to Dan and plan on grabbing a beer with him at TransWorld this year. Congrats on making the Top 15 at the Home Haunter’s Association!

It was an honor to be listed in the Top 15 Home Haunts for the HHA contest. There are many great home haunts out there and to be considered as a finalist was such an honor. I hope that this will bring more attention to my haunt and get my haunt noticed by the professionals. My plan is to open my own professional haunt in the very near future. I feel that I am ready and can’t wait to go pro. It’s my dream.

How did you get started in Home Haunting?

I started small with a few Halloween props in the front yard. My wife had purchased some gory items on Ebay and we displayed them in the front yard and garage. She found out about Transworld while looking up Halloween related stuff on the internet. She asked the supplier of our first props, Jeremy from Creepy Collections (who was just starting out his business), to help us get into the show . He did and so in 2007 we attended our first Transworld in Chicago. This was “the moment” when all things changed. I entered the show and all hell broke loose. I was reborn as a Home Haunter!!!!!

How many years have you been converting your home into a Halloween playground?

2011 will be my 6th year as a home haunter. Over the past 2 years I consider myself to be an extreme home haunter. The difference I believe is in the addition of my backyard walk through haunted house. So not only do I display and have an attraction in my front yard and garage. But I also have a fully constructed 7 room haunted house with actors consuming my entire backyard.

What are the good/evil sides of Home Haunting?

The Pros: seeing all the visitors that come out each year and enjoying themselves. Having a great community function that all can attend. I love to hear screams and laughs from everyone. I know when that is happening that all the blood sweat and tears I put into the haunt is well worth it.  I love the positive feed back that the visitors tell me. I can hear them talking about the haunt as they are getting back into their cars and you know they enjoyed themselves. Each year there are hundreds of repeaters- this is awesome. Last year I joined “Haunts Against Hunger” and raised over $5,000 worth of food for my local food pantery. The other pro is that I am doing what I really, and I mean really love! This is my passion and I believe that I finally have found my calling.

The cons that arise start with not being able to spend a lot of time with my family while getting the haunt ready each year. Everyone is involved with the haunt when October rolls around but otherwise I don’t see enough of them with the haunt and a full-time job.  I hate having to take it all down. I have no real place to store it. And have not been able to park in my garage in years, eat in my dining room, or finish my basement due to all the props. A lot of things around the house get put on the back burner due to time and funds that are not available.   It takes 2 months to put up the haunt and a month to take it down. I really spend 365 days a year planning, designing, constructing then building the haunt.

Do you build or buy most of your props?

Most of the props are purchased while attending the Transwold show. I do make my own props now and am learning all the time and expanding my collection. I design the layout , decorate and highly detail the haunt each year. My favorite vendors are Ghost Ride Prod, Unit 70, Creepy Collections, and Distortions. There are so many others but too many to list. I love them all.

What is one Halloween memory that motivated you and led you here?

My vivid memory comes from Brookfield JC’s haunted house. I look back upon it as a terrifying experience for a young boy. But I enjoyed every minute of it. Chainsaws have a particular place in my heart…

Word of encouragement for those aspiring Haunters out there?

Always enjoy doing it.  Always try to surpass your own expectations. Challenge yourself to make it better each year. And always try to help out a fellow Home Haunter..

A Real Nightmare: True Story (by RFR Casket Crew Brian)

Scott had been building this Haunt for weeks. It wasn’t his building but he had about $10,000 worth of his props hanging on the walls, fog machines, strobe lights; just about 7 years accumulation of props put into this dark attraction. It wasn’t his own venture. At the last minute, an aquaintance begged him for his help because October was quickly arriving and ironically Scott was not going to be able to open his own this year due to financial situations. So like any good haunter would do, he said yes. The events that follow his decision will be difficult to digest by many and it may even piss you off a little bit. It may sound a little surreal; like a bad dream or one of those urban legends you hear about someone’s friend of a friend of a friend. Well, this is a true story and the man I speak of is my brother. This is his nightmare…

The phone rings. Early September. I look at the caller ID and recognize the number. It’s my brother Scott. When it comes to Halloween we both get consumed by it’s dark forces and creative power. Usually this time of year that is the hot topic for us. I was designing a new floor plan for my home haunt when he called. “Wazzuuup?”, I greeted him with our usual greeting. “Waaaazzzzuuuuppp? he replied, seemingly trying to out-do my version. We did small talk for a bit and then he told me of an opportunity that had surfaced for him recently. He had owned his own Haunt on his own property for two years, but over the summer the county inspector delivered him some bad news. Certain codes needed to be met before he was allowed to open this year, codes that require quite a bit of time and money. An old acquaintance that was also in the industry needed help in construction, props and lighting, and actors. Scott was able to supply all of these requests and still be ready to go on opening night- October 8th. This partner was leasing the building, supplying most of the materials, and taking care of the business side of things. He offered a 40-Scott/60-partner split. The deal was made and Scott began immediately. I told him I hoped the best for him and knew he would do well. We said good-bye and I jumped back into my creative whirlpool.

After a few more phone calls with Scott and a couple trips to the Haunt, I was impressed with his dedication and shared his vision as he took me on a walk-through. An old one-level warehouse. Two big open bay doors, nice concession and waiting area, highway front, and plenty of room. He had awesome ideas and he had already put in over two weeks of work; most of the time after he was leaving his first job. Many late nights away from home; focusing on that ‘big’ weekend-you know the kind when your actors don’t get many breaks and you lose count of the numbers. Those kind. His first Haunt was only two years old so the numbers were doubling every year. He still hadn’t found that magic year yet…this was going to be it!

I only talked to Scott a couple of times during the first two weeks because we were both really busy on our inventions. He explained that each weekend was getting better numbers and that he was still building to make things better. He lived about 30 minutes away so he brought his camper to sleep in. If he wasn’t building at work , he was designing at his Haunt. Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks; providing a promising life for 4 kids and a supportive wife. He loved being there, this is his passion, and he knew if he worked his ass off to impress the customers he would be rewarded. That’s what the Bible tells us and most self-help books preach to us; this was going to work.

On October 23th I get a phone call at 7 am,”Scott and his partner got into it. The law was called and some shit went down.” My heart stopped and I felt overwhelmed by all the questions I had floating in my head. I needed to talk to him but I also needed to get to work on time. So after a mentally exhausting day at work I came home to get the real truth. I called Scott up and I couldn’t digest what he told me. Let me try to sum it up for you: On Friday night Scott and Mr.X had a little disagreement on getting an equal split. Mr.X believed no money will be divided to anyone until all rent, materials, & bills were paid first. Then he wanted to change the split ratio in his favor. Many things began to unfold.  Scott left for the night to cool off and get ready for a big Saturday. The next night he shows up and the locksmith is there changing the locks. Mr.X keeps him distant and acts a little suspicious. After a good night of scares and numbers there is a surprise meeting held by Mr.X. After a few condescending words about the night before he proceeded to let everyone know that they were trespassing and to leave his property. He told Scott that all his props were to be left untouched and that they were now his to keep! He was leasing the building so they were legally his to keep! He locked him out of the building! He pushed everyone out of the place and even pushed a door into my little sister as she exited the building! Everyone Scott was related to- OUT! Scott called the law and the Sheriff shows up a few minutes later. Mr.X proceeds to tell the officer that these are his now because it is his building. You should have seen Mr.X’s face when the Sheriff told him the opposite! That Scott was allowed to get what was his and then he would leave! So the whole family: my parents, sister, his wife’s family, kids and senior adults all helped gather most of his things; vans and trailer fulls. Still in a state of shock by the real insanity of this guy. Maybe this was the real Satan that had come to test the will of an honest man? So unreal!

After a few more confrontations and problems Scott finally packed most of his things in every one’svehicles and was ready to leave and never look back. When Mr.X realized he wasn’t going to keep the items that weren’t his and that he wasn’t  going to make any money because he didn’t have any props, he changed his tune. He even wanted Scott to come back tomorrow night to set everything back up! For real? The audacity of some people! Where did this guy come from? Scott left and Mr.X struggled the next two weeks with few actors and limited supplies. I’m not sure if he succeeded in his revised business plan or not, but I also believe that how you treat others will come back to you even stronger. I believe Scott learned a valuable lesson here that will make him stronger in his wisdom. He stared the devil in his face and saw past his lies. This experience happened for this reason..a reason for growth.

This is a prime example of how not to run a haunted attraction. But there are some positive things to get out of this story. He got most of his things back, no one got hurt, and it’s better it happened now than 2 weeks down the road. Just a little reminder to those out there who are thinking about going into partnership-be careful. Sign legal contracts, contact a business lawyer, get EVERYTHING in writing! Stay with your business plan and stick with your contract. Working with family can also be difficult because it’s tough to balance family and business. It can be done with the right attitude. Work hard, stay honest, be grateful for everything, and keep that passion alive! If you do these small steps you’ll have good dreams and hopefully no more nightmares…

UPDATE! UPDATE!
Mr.X had a going-out-of-business sale this past weekend with Saturday 75% off! Another ad on craigslist for $1.50 per 2×4 and $4 for sheets of plywood. So I guess he didn’t have much luck this year, maybe he’ll find a new victim partner next year….

Canadian Haunters Convention Set For 2011

Last year marked the debut of the Canadian Haunters Convention and it was a huge success. The new dates for 2011 have been set and now you can book your travel plans for May 12th – 15th, 2011 at the London Convention Centre, in London, Ontario, Canada.

So far for 2011 it seems things are ramping up. Aside from Rotting Flesh Radio going to be in attendance there are such guests already announced such as Leonard Pickel, editor of Haunted Attraction Magazine, Steve Santini, an escape artist and collector of grim medieval implements of torture, Peter Loughran of Master of Illusions who has built FX for Criss Angel, and is the star of a new Hollywood horror film called Plaster Rock and more.

So as it draws closer, we know you are thinking the Haunt Season, but mark your calendar for May, 2011 for the Canadian Haunters Convention. Pre-Registration will be available so be prepared to invade Canada Haunter Style.

Shrekless: A Halloween Special Set To Air

As we have stated in a previous post about It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, holiday specials are very few in today’s society of bubble wrapping your kids and living p.c.

Well just in time for Halloween will be an All-New Halloween Special from your friends in the land of Shrek. Now Shrek may have said goodbye in the last installment of the film franchise, but Dreamworks has reported that it is teaming up with NBC to create some all new animated holiday specials.

First up will be Shrek in Shrekless. This will be airing on October 28, 2010 and will have Fiona, Donkey, Shrek and the spending the night in Lord Farquaad’s Haunted Castle telling each other ghost stories. This will also be paired along side the re-airing of Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins From Outer Space.

They may not be the holiday specials living up to the Great Pumpkin, but hey we can’t be choosy when getting some Halloween Flair for once. In addition to this they will also have a Christmas Special with Kung Fu Panda and some other goodies.

So set your DVR, sit in front of the boob tube and have some good old fashioned Halloween fun on October 28th.

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown on Blu-Ray

As a child life was much more simple. Less channels to watch and it was a time when society didn’t blacklist holidays or holiday specials.
