Con Carolinas 2011

Con Carolinas 2011

As we approach June, the weather gets warmer, and conventions are in full swing. In a few days we have the Midwest Haunters Convention, and also coming June 3-5, 2011 to Charlotte, NC is the Con Carolinas Sci-Fi and Horror Convention.

This annual event brings you some of the best in Science Fiction, Horror and the Paranormal. This years lineup has somebody for everyone.

First off for you haunters who heard Tom Devlin on Rotting Flesh Radio, and saw him on the SyFy Channel Show “Face Off” know that one of his competitors was Conor McCullagh. Well Connor will be at the Con Carolinas as their Film/Media Special Guest. He will be talking with fans, friends and about FX and Make-Up. And the lineup continues with such names as John Billingsley, Bonita Friedericy, Carla Ulbrich, Justin Chung, Ghost Trek Cast & Crew, David H. Lawrence XVII, Addy Miller, Brinke Stevens and more.

With this linrup it is sure to be a fun weekend. Now on top of that there are also a variety of vendors that will be there selling items, collectibles plus a Gaming Room, Film Screenings and social activies that includes a Costume Contest.

All in all, if you cannot make your way to Ohio this weekend for MHC, then you should drive on over the the Con Carolinas event and kick off summer right with your chosen Sci Fi / Horror Bang!

For more information about the Con Carolinas event visit: www.ConCarolinas.org

ABOUT CON CAROLINAS:
ConCarolinas is a general multi-genre multi-media convention. We called ourselves a sci-fi convention but in truth we cover all speculative fiction – science fiction, fantasy and horror. It hosts a variety of fandom related events and guests, including gaming, discussion panels, costume events, music events like Klingon Karaoke, charity auction, SCA events, fan groups like the 501st Stormtroopers, Starfleet, and Klingon Assault Group, and something different every year.

In 2003 we held our first full-blown 3-day Science Fiction con – a longer Con than the 2-day 2002 “Prequel” the previous year. It was larger than the mini-con, using more space, having more panels, writing seminars, a bigger dealer room and more guests, including Guest of Honor David Weber. Since then, ConCarolinas has grown to be one of the more respected and talked about cons in the region.

ConCarolinas is a fan-based group orginally sponsored by South Eastern Convention Fandom, Inc (SECFi), and as of 2008, incorporated into our own ConCarolinas, Inc., a nonprofit organization. We are a regional committee, pulling the majority of its members of our ConCom from North and South Carolina.

Where will the Unknown Scare Actor be Luring at the Midwewst Haunters Convention

Greetings Deadites, the The RFR Casket Crew’s Unknown Scare Actor here,

Well, the holiday weekend is over, the grill has been put away, and I never want to see s sheet of drywall again!!! But its all good, because next weekend it the Midwest Haunters Convention! I have been waiting for a year. Unfortunate circumstances prevented me from going last year, but the plans have been made, the hotel has been booked, the scare-mobile has been gassed up, and the costumes are prepped.

I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of you deadites, and I hope to see some of you in Badger’s Boo Camp seminar, as I will be assisting him. Keep an eye out for the casket crew as we will be lurking around the tradeshow floor, and you never know which mask I might be wearing. The costume ball looks to be an awesome night, with  a lot going on, from Miss Scary Midwest (RFR Haunt Hottie Jackie is a contestant) to the body art contest, as well as the dancing and mingling with haunters from all over the country.

So if someone comes up to you with a mic and asks what phobias you have, it just might be me….

See you all this weekend, and always remember, Everyone………is afraid of something!

Be a Sponsor for Insane Shane’s TransWorld Party

February 1, 2011 Haunt Industry, News No Comments

Thursday March 10th, 2011
Renaissance Grand Hotel Crystal Ball Room
St. Louis, MO
7:30PM to 12:30AM

http://www.insaneshaneparty.com/

Insane Shane is doing it again! Providing a gruesome and exciting atmosphere while staying true to the meaning of Haunt parties. Many patrons have get-togethers, charge fees to get in, and have door prizes. However, the TransWorld Kick-Off Party keeps the atmosphere inspiring and focuses on the most important value in our field: connecting! Where else can you hang out with great legends like Ben Armstrong from NetherWorld, Eric Lowher from Haunted Overload, or Paul Johnson from Atrox; just to name a few. There were over 200 people that attended Insane Shane’s masterpiece last year and everyone that I have interviewed have all had great things to say! Do these haunters look like they’re having fun?

[slideshow]

Click here for more information on The Insane Shane Party.

Ponder this: $95 a head for hours of networking with Haunt Industry leaders, all-you-can eat buffet, a costume party with a $300 grand prize, thousands of dollars in door prizes raffled off throughout the entire night, two free spiked drinks, an iNsane Shane T-shirt, and the invaluable story you can tell your friends the next day. If you put all of these facts into an equation it would probably tell you that this party of under-priced….but let’s not tell Shane Dobbs that….shhhhh…..

Let’s talk about why you need to donate to the party. The real question is: Why not? Any and all donations are accepted. As long as they are items a haunter would benefit from and are in good condition. Donating products to the party is a way to show your support in growing this event each year and a great opportunity to get exposure for your brand. The more door prizes-the more people will attend. Haunters love free stuff! I know I do. Haunters helping Haunters.

If you want your name to be listed in Hauntworld Magazine you need to let the crew know by December 30th. All donations will be accepted until Feburary 20th. Email the crew at terrormasue@yahoo.com or Shane at shanedabbs@aol.com . Here are a list of donations so far.

Canadian Haunters Convention Set For 2011

Last year marked the debut of the Canadian Haunters Convention and it was a huge success. The new dates for 2011 have been set and now you can book your travel plans for May 12th – 15th, 2011 at the London Convention Centre, in London, Ontario, Canada.

So far for 2011 it seems things are ramping up. Aside from Rotting Flesh Radio going to be in attendance there are such guests already announced such as Leonard Pickel, editor of Haunted Attraction Magazine, Steve Santini, an escape artist and collector of grim medieval implements of torture, Peter Loughran of Master of Illusions who has built FX for Criss Angel, and is the star of a new Hollywood horror film called Plaster Rock and more.

So as it draws closer, we know you are thinking the Haunt Season, but mark your calendar for May, 2011 for the Canadian Haunters Convention. Pre-Registration will be available so be prepared to invade Canada Haunter Style.

Queen City Scare Fair Coming

Roger Smith of Temple Theater, W. Charles Newell and geektyrant.com are partnering to bring independent horror films to Meridian, MS. On October 22nd-23rd , 2010 Temple Theater will host Meridian’s first horror film festival to celebrate Halloween and Mississippi’s first entertainment district.

“Independent horror films have always been a passion of mine, now I finally have a chance to share these films with others,” says Newell, coordinator of Queen City Scare Fair and founder of Meridian Grindhouse Association. This event will allow top rated films from the festival circuit to connect with a new audience in the south. “Really, it’s a theater for the people here,”
Smith says. “The theater is very important to the city of Meridian and the people, and we just need to keep as much activity as we can in the theater.” Smith believes that the QCSF will draw a whole new audience into the historic Temple Theater. The QCSF will give its guests the chance to judge new independent Horror Films and award the first ever “Queen City Townie” award.

The Queen City Scare Fair will open it‘s doors at 7 pm on the 22nd and 10 am on the 23rd.

For more information on the event, vendors and more visit: www.TempleTheaterMeridian.com. You can also friend them on Facebook at: Facebook.com/Meridian Grindhouse

ABOUT THE TEMPLE THEATER MERIDIAN:
By the early 1920s, the Meridian membership of the Hamasa Shrine had outgrown their building and wanted a larger facility that would not only accommodate their needs for the various meetings and ceremonies they conducted – but also as a multi-purpose facility to serve the community. Architect Emile Weil was engaged to design the building – as he was already well known for his grand designs. Mr. Weil delivered a plan that met the Shrine’s expectations – and perhaps even more. Construction began in 1923 – with the Grand Ballroom being completed in November 1924. The Shrine moved in and conducted it’s meetings and ceremonies there while the rest of the building was being completed. The building today is much the same as originally built -exterior in Moorish Revival style with the interior featuring Byzantine motif decorations with exceptional attention to details. Being built on a corner allowed each part of the building to enjoy it’s own street access – the theater facing onto 8th Street; while the ballroom is accessible from 24th Avenue. The theater’s construction was completed some months later – taking it’s place as a truly grand facility that rivaled any in the nation – In fact when completed in 1928 – the Temple’s stage was second in size only to the Roxy Theater in New York. However – for the first few months after completion – the only entertainment available were the occasional traveling show and wrestling matches.

In 1927 the Hamasa Shrine struck a deal with the Saenger Theater chain that would begin the process of allowing the Temple to fulfill it’s potential. Signing a lease/management contract made the Saenger brothers of New Orleans responsible for bringing movies and other entertainment to the Temple Theater for the next 40 years. As part of their “upgrades” made to the theater, a 3 manual 8 rank Robert Morton Theater Pipe Organ was installed to accompany the silent movies of the time. Even though the silent era didn’t last much longer, the organ continued to provide a lot of entertainment. During the next 40+ years thousands of movies and hundreds of famous (and not so famous) entertainers would grace the Temple with some of the finest entertainment available anywhere in the world.

In 1973 the Hamasa Shrine undertook a general restoration project which ranged from repairing damaged plaster, cleaning and painting, reupholstering the seats and replacing the carpets. Since then and until recently – the Temple Theater has seen only limited use, and only nominal maintenance – and the building was put up for sale.

In February 2009, a deal was struck between the Shriners and a semi-retired business man from Dallas. Roger Smith stepped forward – and has purchased the entire facility – Theater and Ballroom – and has committed to not only bringing the Temple back to it’s former splendor, but to create and present a rich and full calendar of events and entertainment.
