Robert Englund to bring Halloween fun to Hawaii 5-0 in their Halloween Special

Robert Englund

Robert Englund

Robert Englund, no stranger to us here at Rotting Flesh Radio, has been a guest a variety of times for us. He is best known as his role of Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and has a large cult following in other films as well.

Well just in time for television and Halloween Fun, Robert is going to play a homeless veteran of the first Gulf War and become a suspect is a murder as he ventures around an ancient burial ground. This is going to happen where else, in the most beautiful of places… Hawaii 5-0.

Robert has been known to have cameos in many television roles, movies and more and now his presence for horror fans around the world can be seen in the Halloween edition of the sleeper hit re-boot of Hawaii 5-0.

The show has gained in popularity and it this reboot has introduced a new generation to the cop duo in the show. Each week they banter, uncover crimes and more. While Robert, has been best known as Freddy Krueger, is in our friend John LaFlamboy’s MOLE MAN movie, had his last screen appearance as the clawed killer in Freddy vs. Jason. The franchise has since been re-booted without Robert donning the make-up. It didn’t hit too well with fans and that shows in the quick disappearance of the new face of Freddy.

Hawaii 5-0

Hawaii 5-0

Be sure to catch the new season of Hawaii 5-0 when it kicks off on September 19, 2011 on CBS. And be on the lookout for Freddy, playing an actor named Robert, or vice versa.

You can find many of Robert’s appearance on Rotting Flesh Radio in our archives page.

Scare-Actor Spotlight: Ro Tag

by: RFR Casket Crew Unknown Scare Actor

As Rotting Flesh Radio draws closer to the Haunt Season, we continue to bring the Haunted Attraction Industry, Halloween Fun, Home Haunt, Pro Haunt and more to you weekly. With that said, we like to bring you the people who bring those haunted houses to life, scare you and make you shiver in fear every Halloween. So this week we continue with our SCARE ACTOR SPOTLIGHT.

Haunted House Scare Actor: RoTag

Haunted house Scare Actor: RoTag

Let me start by saying that my name isn’t ro tag; but it is the name I use when online & scare acting. I’ve always been into the Halloween bit. As a kid I almost always dressed as a grim reaper. I first got the taste for scare acting when I was in middle school & participated in a fun, but short lived haunted house that the 4h horse & pony club. I would roam around as the grim reaper but didn’t really discover how much fun scaring could be till the night they stuck me in a casket & I got to control the push button fog machine.

Now after that, I was no longer timid of haunted houses & started to visit several as a patron. After the year of 2008, I decided that I would try-out for Kings Island’s Halloween Haunt in 2009. I got placed in there attraction called Urgent Scare as an infected nurse towards the end of the maze (if you have seen the movie called “The Crazies”, that’s what the attraction was based around). It wasn’t too much longer after rehearsals that I started to explore my talents.

I had some nights where I would sit on toppled over shopping carts & play statue; then for the one’s who wouldn’t be paying attention. That’s when I would snap to life on them. There were other nights that I would fit into small tight spaces that you wouldn’t expect someone (let alone a BIG guy) to be hiding in & pop out rapidly making cannibalistic snarling noises. Then there were times that I could get a group twice, once & the beginning of a straight away & then sneak down the backside of the straight away to nail them again when they would reach that end; followed by a sorta dance back down to other end of straight away. There were times I couldn’t necessarily get back in time for the next group coming, so I would sprint down the straight away till I got near them, then I would side step & bounce up off the curb to get airborne & look like I was going to land on top of them (but I made sure I never did land on them (safety). & lastly one of the easiest scares I learned to do is that I figured out how to make the fog thick enough outdoors to where I could hide in it. Then I would take on huge step (bout 6 ft lunge) toward the guest & snarl in there ear (while keeping a smile on my face), followed by flinging myself back into the dark shroud of the fog.

I went through the 2010 season visiting haunts & doing some fill-in work here & there. During the off-season, I was going to horror conventions dressed as Dr. Ro Tag. The basis behind this character is that he is a Zombie Voodoo Doctor. He has an accent that is a cross between Cajun & German. I do like this character, but I also miss the scaring; so this year, I can be found out on a trail as a scarecrow @ a place called The Mayhem Mansion. It’s located on 13966 DeCoursey Pike, Morning View, KY 41063. For more info on this Scream in the woods, you can visit: www.TheMayhemMansion.com.

Some advice for the newbie’s that are just getting there start: Rest up before your nights of scaring as it can wear you out if you don’t get plenty off it. Explore your surroundings to help build your character Bring enough cough drops &/or water that you can disguise in your scene Know the difference between someone slinging a punch out of fear & someone just trying to harass you.

Build multiple scenarios as to keep yourself fresh (that way you don’t get bored & if you encounter the same guest over & over, you can provide them with a little new material. Always listen to the veterans as they are a plethora of insider info & been there long enough to know what works & what doesn’t. Don’t & I repeat DON’T say “boo” or “get out”. Those are just cliché & tacky. & lastly don’t let anyone get you down or say that you suck. Prove them wrong by scaring the hell out of them.

After 25 Years, Dublin Ohio will Scare it up with a Haunted House

Dublin Ohio's Scare-A-torium

Dublin Ohio's Scare-A-torium

It’s been more than 25 years since a haunted attraction operated in the Dublin area. This fall; the Scare-A-Torium, one of the scariest Halloween haunted attractions in Ohio has relocated to the Dublin Village Center south of I-270 and Sawmill Road. The Scare-A-Torium provides two attractions with more than 50 creative scenes with a support staff of 80 actors, makeup artists and safety personnel.

The last haunt in Dublin was operated by the Jaycees. They used to operate in old schools and abandoned houses, but requirements for sprinkler systems and costly safety features forced many of them to close. Haunted attractions have evolved in many ways to entertain guests in a safe manner. Also the appearance and performance of entertainers has changed with special effects makeup and custom characters.

The Scare-A-Torium

The Scare-A-Torium

[

The Scare-A-Torium, housed in the 31,000 square foot Dublin Village Center space will offer the ultimate in fright-entertainment. The Scare-A-Torium formerly operated for two years at Karl Road and Rt 161 in a former Big Bear grocery store space. "The haunt received rave reviews from haunt teams that traveled throughout the Ohio Valley. We were rated # 1 in acting, costuming and makeup by the Ohio Valley Haunt Reviewer. They visited over 80 attractions last year we’re thrilled they voted us the best," boasted Kelly Collins, the mastermind and haunted industry veteran behind the attraction. He continues, "We have a solid team of performers and we’ve been holding training sessions on makeup and acting year round.”

“With the new location in Dublin; we’ve added more scenes and created an awesome castle entrance that will be visible through large windows from the parking lot” added Collins. “Our new location offers lots of free parking and is easily accessible from the Outer belt, Dublin Granville Road, Riverside Drive and Sawmill Road.”

The Scare-A-Torium includes two haunted attractions and they’ll be open Thursday through Sunday nights during the month of October and the last weekend in September. The Scare-A-Torium is a collection of fears from around the world with a second attraction; RIP’s Funhouse; creating one of the largest haunted attractions in central Ohio.

The Scare-A-Torium is a very frightening experience and it is not recommended for small children, but special Family Friendly tours are offered on October Sunday afternoons from 4:30 – 7:00 pm for families. Kids 12 and under are admitted for just $1 with a special $7 adult admission ticket purchase. The overhead lights are on, the sounds are on, but there won’t be any monsters in there to frighten them. Members of the Ghost Busters of Columbus and non-scary performers will assist as tour guides during the Lights-on tours. A portion of proceeds is donated to local community organizations.

The Scare-A-Torium Haunted Attraction is located in the Dublin Village Center at 6765 Dublin Center Drive in Dublin, Ohio, 43017; immediately South and East off I-270 and Sawmill Road near the Dublin AMC 18 Movie Theater.

If only we could ask Dr. Frankenstein about his “Abby Normal” Experimentations…

by: RFR Casket Crew Hatter 99

Haunt Season is Drawing Near

Haunt Season is Drawing Near

For some of us, IT’S HERE. For others (like myself), there are a couple of weeks or so to go until our haunts open. Whatever the case, the witching season is near…Here in Ohio there is a cool nip in the air, cornstalks reaching toward the stars, and Halloween superstores popping up everywhere. This week down the rabbit hole let’s discuss the importance of experimentation, while our neonatal Halloween season is still gooey and awaiting its newborn spank.

Hat ON.

Technically I only began my haunting career one year ago, so almost everything that I’m doing is still experimental for me. I expect that many veteran haunters with open minds are likewise constantly involved in similar experimentations. For a newbie haunter like me, though, I learn a thousand new things every night. From scaring methods to makeup techniques to dealing with difficult members of the public, there are multiple opportunities every night for experimentation. Thankfully, I’ve found that most haunts encourage their employees to experiment. Any good haunter will know if a particular technique is working in soliciting scares; likewise, any good haunter will want to experiment with a different technique if things aren’t going so well. Of course we all have our boundaries and are responsible for keeping within those boundaries, but it’s not like we’re assembling computer chips…There is no mathematical science in this gig. What works for one group might not work for the next, and one reason that haunt owners hire actors instead of buying animatronics is that we are capable of adapting to various situations. Is one hiding-place not creating a satisfactory number of scares?

Plant Monster from Evilusions

Plant Monster from Evilusions

Try somewhere else. Do groups keep bumping into each other at a certain point in the Haunt? Maybe they need to be sped up or slowed down somewhere through some creative acting. Devise a theory. Develop a plan. Test your hypothesis. EXPERIMENT. We’re not going to get 100% scares every time. If you’re a good haunter, you’ll know it, and you’ll get enough good scares to make up for the duds. We all know that some members of the public refuse to have fun and get scared in a haunt, and in those cases we can’t do anything about that, but in other cases it might be a genuine rift in the haunt itself that you, as an intelligent, problem-solving, living human upright thing can solve through experimenting.

Announcing: Faces of the Great Pumpkin Art Contest from PumpkinCult.com

The Cult of the Great Pumpkin

The Cult of the Great Pumpkin

OK, Pumpkinauts, it’s time to show your love for The Great Pumpkin through art! The Cult of the Great Pumpkin, in association with Sinister Visions Inc., is sponsoring its very first contest: Faces of The Great Pumpkin.

The concept is simple: Draw, paint, sculpt or otherwise create a portrait of The Great Pumpkin. That is, YOUR VISION of The Great Pumpkin. Since nobody’s ever seen him (and lived to tell about it, anyway), his appearance is completely open to interpretation, and that’s what we want to see! Let your imagination run wild, commit your ideas to paper, screen, sculpt or pumpkin pulp, and send it in!

RULES:
– One submission per artist.

– The piece submitted must be an original work of art, not derivative or plagiarized. Any submission shown to be stolen or “borrowed” from another’s work will be disqualified.

– The piece must be a portrait of The Great Pumpkin, however you interpret that concept.

– The piece does not have to be exclusive to this contest.

DEADLINES
– All entries must be received by midnight on September 30th, 2011.

– Voting will begin on October 1st, 2011 and end at midnight on October 30th, 2011.

– The winners will be announced on Halloween, October 31st, 2011.

Faces of the Great Pumpkin Contest

Faces of the Great Pumpkin Contest

VOTING
– Voting will take place via this website; the voters will be the site’s visitors. The contest will be heavily promoted via social media and other networking avenues already in place. In the event of a tie, Sam Pumpking will make the final call.

SUBMISSIONS
– Send an image file, either as an email attachment or link, to contact@pumpkincult.com. JPG preferred, PNG is OK too.

– People will be voting on the image you send, so a crappy cell phone photo isn’t going to do you any favors.

– Sculptures or other 3D works may include up to 5 images to show multiple angles.

– Max dimensions: 800 pixels on the longest side.

– Max resolution: 72 dpi – this is a web-based contest. It doesn’t need to be larger.

– Watermarking is OK, within reason. If you obscure your own art, it may hurt your chances of winning.

Include with your submission:
Your name
Preferred email address
Website (if you have one)
Title of piece
Media
Year it was created

USAGE
– Submitted artwork remains the property of the submitting artist.

– Submitted artwork will appear in a gallery at PumpkinCult.com in perpetuity.

– Submitted artwork may be used to promote the contest, including (but not limited to) the front page blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Appropriate credits will always be given.

A Rockin’ Way to Prep Your Limbs for the Haunting Season

by: RFR Casket Crew Hatter 99

Thriller ' A Horror Pop Classic'

Thriller ' A Horror Pop Classic'

In a few short weeks we as scareactors get to shine up our trusty black hauntin’-shoes, de-coagulate our fake blood, and scrape the crusty crud off of our makeup tubes. Mentally, we’re ready. Physically, perhaps not so much. So this week I’d like to share a fun way to get into nimble shape for the haunting season while perhaps fulfilling a lifelong dream that you might have.

Hat ON.

As a child of the 80s, I grew up identifying Michael Jackson’s Thriller as my all-time favorite music video, and it remains so to this day. Killer makeup + Vincent Price + Zombies dancing in the street. It’s a perfect mashup. I always loved that zombie dance sequence, and through the years I would sit on the couch and dream of doing those moves. A few years ago, as I was watching the video, I finally discovered that I actually had legs. I wiggled my right foot. And then I wiggled my left foot. And then–wait for it–YES! I wiggled them both. I stood up, rewound the video to the beginning, and tried to dance along with the video. My confidence quickly fizzled, though, when I discovered that it’s a friggin’ hard dance to do without any instruction. Distraught but still keen to learn, I Googled “How to do the Thriller dance.” After sifting through a few useless sites and smart aleck comments of “Watch the music video,” I found one site that looked promising, THRILL THE WORLD, an entire website devoted to teaching people how to do the dance, and it’s a FANTASTIC resource. The goal of the site is to gather as many people as possible to perform the iconic dance at the same time in their respective areas of the world, and within the site are a plethora of resources for teaching and learning the dance, including dance scripts and instructional videos. If you click “Learn the Dance,” you’ll be taken to a page where you can order the DVD or view all of the videos on YouTube. The instructor breaks the dance down into manageable little chunks, creatively naming each move (e.g. shuffle, hop, stare, roar), and instructing the dancer to say (out loud) those moves when learning the steps. It works like a charm, and in a few short days you’ll be able to mentally chant those moves as you are performing the dance alongside MJ in the video.

Learn How to Monster Dance

Learn How to Monster Dance

So, if you’re looking for a fun way to loosen up for the haunting season and don’t really want to hit up the boring old gym, you can cue up the videos and rot away in your living room. Pull the shades for some spooky darkness. Put on a costume and some makeup if you’re so inclined. And remember: You don’t have to normally be a dancer to have fun with this; after all, you’re playing a zombie, so you can stumble around and screw up your moves all you want, and nobody will be any the wiser. I have zero experience in dancing, but the way the lessons are structured with the emphasis in naming each movement rather than counting, I can do the dance now at will and will likely never forget the chants. That’ll come in handy when I’m six feet under and have a sudden hankering to climb up and do an impromptu performance in the street.

Monstermatt's Bad Monster Jokes Vol. 1

Book publisher Pill Hill Press, is pleased to announce an official scheduled release for “Monstermatt’s Bad Monster Jokes Vol.1″, written by Monstermatt Patterson, illustrated by Kyle Kaczmarczyk, with an introduction by Joe Moe and an afterword by Pat Tantalo, for their non-fiction imprint, WestNeb Books.

WestNebBooks acquired the book from it’s previous publisher, during a brief and successful run, with both critics and readers alike. Some changes have been made to the book, including some added content.

“Monstermatt’s Bad Monster Jokes Vol.1″ is a self described collection of over 400 badjokes, rancid rhymes, putrid puns and sophomoric song parodies, with illustrations, focused on horror films, monsters, sci-fi, superheroes and some popculture for good measure.

According to Pill Hill Press and WestNeb Books editor Jessy Marie Roberts, September 21st, 2011 is the scheduled release for Volume 1. Just in time for Halloween! Volumes 2 and 3 are currently being written with no release dates yet for the follow up editions.

Monstermatt has written over one thousand bad monsterjokes and this first volume gives you a sizeable introduction to the humor that resides within. The marriage of the jokes to Kyle Kaczmarczyk’s insightful illustrations are what has fans waiting for more!

What can readers expect?
Bad jokes like:

Does the 666 on Damien Thorne’s scalp mean he’s the Devil?

No, it’s his “Credit Score”!

——

Why was The Wolfman mad at his H.M.O.?

They wouldn’t pay for his “flea dip”!

——

Where does H.P.Lovecraft like to shop?

Bed, Bath & “From Beyond”!

——

What coffee drink does The Phantom of the Opera like?

La lalalalalala, latte!

——

Sophomoric song parody lyrics like:

“My Zombie Valentine”
“Intestines”
“Monsters in the Night”

And many, many more…

According to duo the book is acting as an introduction to the horror genre for newcomers while entertaining those already familiar with it. Jokes and illustrations about Frankenstein and Dracula to jokes about “The Manitou” and “Basket Case” even “The Human Centipede” are turning many a newcomer into a horror buff. The duo has heard feedback from readers that watched “Dead Snow” and some other notable films due to the book.

The jokes and song parodies have been used on horror podcasts like:

RueMorgue Radio
Screamwave Podcast
Rotting Flesh Radio
Tomb TV with Tomb Dragomir

And more. This has helped to build a growing following of Maniacs(fans).

As the Emcee of Buffalo MonsterFest 2010, Monstermatt got a chance to field test his brand of humor-a mixture of Mad Magazine/Famous Monsters/Benny Hill/Borscht Belt Comedy finding that what produced groans from the audience felt delicious to him!

With Kaczmarczyk at the drawing pad, illustrating sight gags he knew they had something “ghoul” going on that could entertain, enlighten and grow on the reader.

Some notable names from the horror genre weigh in on the book:

“I wrote this blurb so Matt would stop the Pun-ishment.”

-Rodrigo Gudino, Rue Morgue Magazine

——

“I tried very hard to find anything remotely amusing or anything that might induce at least a chuckle from this ‘Joke Book’ but was unsuccessful. In fact it actually ‘scared’ me how corny it is and that is hard to do to me! At least you have the guts. Congrats!”

-Tony Moran, The Original Michael Myers (Halloween,1979)

——

“You can open any page of this book, read one line and feel intense pain throughout your entire body. I’m in awe.”

-Joe Bob Briggs, Drive-In Critic & Host of MonsterVision

——

Here’s what the Monsters themselves are saying about the book.
